My DVD drive won't read after a hard drive format - help!

Hi, I've got a Compaq @4 years old, and I just reformatted the hard drive. I backed up all my docs and programs to DVD (DVD+R discs).

Now everything's back up and running great, except my DVD drive won't recognize discs, play them, or allow recording. I've also got a CD drive that is working fine.

Both of the DVD and CD drive were set to "Cable Select", so I figured I'd go Master and Slave to see if that works. No luck.

The drive is shown in My Computer, no conflicts are displayed in the Device Manager, and I've uninstalled and reinstalled the driver and hardware.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

How did you specifically backup stuff to the DVDs? Just using Windoze burning function? Some other burning program like Nero or Roxio? Or did you use some sort of backup software?

Have you tried other disks in the DVD drive, such an audio/music CD or a movie DVD or a program's install CD/DVD?

Absolutely no disc will read, whether CD, DVD, program disc, data disc, nothing.

Even though I used DVD+R's before, I wonder if DVD-R's will make a difference now? Unfortunately I just bought a whole stack of +R's X-(

If no disc will work in that drive, then tends to suggest that it is something the drive or driver for the drive or the OS.

I forget (and cannot see the previous posts at the moment)...have you checked that the drive has a proper working driver installed in the Device Manager (should be under the DVD/CD-ROM drives portion)? And double checked all connections?

I've got DVD - and + Rs now, and neither are working. CDs don't read either. The DVD hardware is an HP 640b, and I'm not finding it on their site anymore. I wonder if it's just an outdated model, and the correct driver doesn't exist anymore.

I've tried the Master Slave setup, and I'm currently back to the Cable Select. If I remove the CD drive completely (hardware), still no luck.

Unfortunately, it kind sounds like the DVD drive might be toast, as strange as that sounds. About the only other thing that I can think to suggest is to try cleaning it. You can use one of those disks with little brushes on it that you stick in and let spin for a period of time. If you are feeling really adventurous, you could try taking it appart to clean. Other than that, it might be time for a new DVD burner...you can get them these days for about $30 or so.

Normally I'd say the drive went bad too, but this happened when I reformatted and reinstalled Windows XP. So I'm really leaning towards some kind of
driver issue, but it says the driver is up to date.

Hi Sombeech and welcome to PCWorld. :-)

If you feel so strongly that this is not a hardware issue, the only other option is to take the DVD drive out and install it in another computer. If you are able to read CDs and DVDs, you know that the problem is your computer, or more specifically, your system configuration. If you are unable to read CDs and DVDs when installed in another computer, it is safe to say the DVD drive is dead and needs to be replaced....or at the very least the optical eye may need to be cleaned.
