Assign Both Text and Commands Using Microsoft Word

I am sure I am dating myself, however a long time ago I used a Word Processing program called Xywrite. At the time it was fast and had several unique functions, one of which I could use on a project I am now involved with.

It would allow the user to assign both text and commands under any key combination. Example: Under (Control V) you could store the word vertical.

I am sure I am missing something, but it seems I should be able to do the same thing using the old Word program I am now using.

Any ideas on how to do this or any simple add on programs that are available.

You can assign an key combination/stroke to a command in Word. If you goto the Tools menu and select Customize, it will bring up a window to customize Word. The first tab (Toolbars) allows you to turn on and off toolbars and add new toolbars. The second tab (Commands) allows you to drap any command to either a menu or a toolbar. In all tabs, there is a Keyboard... button. Clicking it will open a window that then allows you to select a command and assign a key combination/stroke to that command.

I am not sure about what you mean by assigning text...but if you mean having "pretyped" words or phrases assigned to a key combination/stroke, then I not aware of a way to do that with Word using standard stuff...other than a macro.

Yes as Smax said there is no way to do that with word, word does not support that function.

What smax suggests also works with macros, and you can use macros to insert text. Select Tools>Macros>Record New Macro and you can figure it out from there. Then you can assign it to a key combination using smax's directions.

But there's another way to do boilerplate text in Word: Autocorrect Options, which are also on the Tools menu. This replaces one text string with another as you type. For instance, I have it set up so that if I type ww, and follow it with the space bar or a punctuation key, the 'ww' becomes 'Windows'.
