Computer Automatically Restarts After Shutdown

I have a Toshiba laptop with Vista Home premium, after feb 14 it started restarting after shutdown, the only way to get it to turn off is to hold the pwr button for a few seconds. I went back to a restore point ( dec of 2007), still restarts. Now Vista SP1 is downloaded but not installed, and installation of updates (automatic) is disabled. PC still restarts when shutdown is selected. Microsoft Onecare is installed.

Hi TheNetRanger and welcome to the PCWorld Communities. :D

If I am not mistaken, Microsoft pulled the exact two Updates that you installed because of various issues. When you did a System Restore back to December 2007, did you confirm that those two Security Updates were not listed? I know it is a stretch but I am fairly confident that those two Security Updates may be the reason for your problem.

Hi TheNetRanger. If your end game is to give the computer to your niece, than yes a reformat and reinstallation may be best. This should always be a last resort but no sense in beating yourself up over a computer you are going to give away, right?

Okay, let's step back for a moment. You have listed several troubleshooting steps that you have tried so far. Is there anything you have tried that you have not listed here?

The fact that the computer shut down properly while in Safe Mode leads me to believe there is an Operating System error. However, to do a repair of Windows Vista, you must use the Windows Vista DVD.

Now, I am not sure if Toshiba provided you with the Windows Vista DVD or not but if they did not, here is blog website that provides an .iso of a Microsoft approved Windows Vista Recovery DVD. Once burned to a DVD, this will allow you to run the repair process.

The most comprehensive site that I have seen to assist someone with a repair is bleepingcomputer.com. Click on this hyperlink and follow the steps laid out. Unfortunately, this will not tell you what the problem was. This will just correct any issue with Windows Vista itself.
