Have you tried downloading the software/drivers from the HP site? It is possible that there is a problem with the disk that came with the printer and thus the software is just not able to completely install properly. Here is the driver page for Windoze XP for that printer, I believe.

I am also assuming that you are following the instructions carefully. Typically, HP instructs you NOT to hook up the printer until AFTER the drivers are installed, I believe.

First, I have a C5180. You have to hook up the hardware, then on restart, you'll get the found new Hardware box at the tray. You click this for the installation wizard and follow that. That is from the HP setup instructions for this thing. The installation went without a hitch, wish I could say the same about some other installations I've done. bigwillie didn't say what his ram was, as that could possibly be an issue if he is light on ram, although he would have probably gotten a message if there was a system specs issue, as the HP software checks the system before installation. coastie65
