'USB Device Over Current Status Detected' Error Message Using ASUS Motherboard

Dear Sir,

I was using my home computer with an Intel 850MV motherboard, 256MB RDRAM @ 600Mhz, ASUS V7100 Pro, PixelView PCI TV Tuner & Audigy2 on a 300W Power Supply, for some years now. Recently, I wanted to upgrade & get myself the following:

1. 500W power supply, as I was going to use the same cabinet;
2. Asus Motherboard P5GC-MX (1333 capable);
3. Intel Core 2 Duo 1.66 GHz;
4. 1GB DDR2 @ 667 Mhz RAM;
5. SATA HDD;
6. Pinnacle USB Stick Pro;

Currently I intend to set up the system only on these and later add my Audigy & and an ATI 2 series PCIx card with 256MB VRAM.

After changing to the new MB, CPU, RAM, Audigy & HDD, on the old Power Supply, I installed Windows XP with SP2 (Licensed), and all the MB drivers and the Pinnacle TV tuner I watched TV for sometime & shut down the system.
Next day, when I tried to boot up the system, I get an error right after the POST that says:
'USB device over current status detected
your computer will reboot in 15 seconds!'
and it does reboot by itself.

I have tried every trick in the book like clearing the BIOS via jumpers.
Disconnected all USB devices (there never was a powered USB device connected anytime).
Dismantling & reassembling the whole system.
Now I have taken out the Audigy too & changed to the new 500W SMPS.

It's been 3 days now & everytime I try to boot the system, I get the same error, the computer is never booting into Windows.
Could you please give me a solution to this problem? I have searched the web to find that this is not a new problem but there seems no proper solution is available to this one either. Do I need to change the MB?

Looking forward to your feedback.

Anupam Bhoumick

Try this
Go into bios setup
choose "load default settings"
save & exit

If that dont work download the latest bios for that MB and flash the bios.

My gut feeling is its a bum MB that you will havta send back.
BUT the "smarter than smart" ones will be all over this one, once they come online.

Hi ABHoumick and welcome to PCWorld. :-)

First, I have renamed your Discussion to give a clearer picture of your problem. Now, as Snorg mentioned, one option is to update the BIOS; however, since you cannot get to the BIOS, there are a couple of other options. But first, can you please tell us your current computer specifications? You mentioned that you made changes to basically your entire system so there may be a conflict somewhere. Once you detailed your computer specifications, we can proceed from there.

I suspect an electrical short circuit or near to it.
Try unplugging any & all USB connectors on the MB and see if you can get into bios then.

Hey and Welkom to Pc world, as to snorg it can can't be a bum Mb as if it was then it will not give a screen, so when the computer loads before the blue screen try pushing F8 or delete, have you tried like that?

Re: 'USB Device Over Current Status Detected' Error Message Using ASUS Motherboard

Hi abhoumick.

Got the same problem myself. For me, it was a GPU upgrade that prompted this error. I'm using an ASUS P5L-MX and upgraded my 7300GT 256MB video card to the 8800GT one. As soon as I came to the point when I had the card and power cables plugged I got this error. I couldn't find any solution to the problem since it occured after POST. It was so frustrating.

Fortunately enough here's the solution. The problem (at least in my case) was that my motherboard USB device lacked jumpers specifically in USBPW5678 (chek your motherboard documentation to get to the jumper location). As I said, I found the USB jumpers on the board and saw that the USBPW5678 had no jumper. Plugged a jumper and set it to pin 1-2 and restarted. That did it.

It booted all the way to Windows.

Hope that helps.
