Analysts, by and large never get it. These are the same people that said the iphone wasn't a very good device...and yet now it is the second largest marketshare of smartphones. How you could miss that one is beyond me.

So, lets look at the device and what it was obviously meant for. This device was not meant for Apple's traditional markets of students or multimedia people. Oh, and by the way many tech workers use macbook pro...not just for artists.

The air was meant for the business person who didn't want a PC...or who wants to try a mac. Expensive? Compared to what? If you look at its competition (Dell X1, IBM utra-portable, and configured them the same, the mac is the same price or cheaper! Many of the executives in my company use mac's and almost none of them will ever use the power or ports of the MBP. Many of them travel constantly. The AIR is a great product for that type of user...and gives Apple a whole new market.

Signed, a real technologist.

I want one. I have a macbook pro, but it is heavy. I use it on my lap to surf the web and watch movies. The Air will be much better for that. I do not need to load disks into my computer, and I have not used a cat 5 cable in 3 years. I would need my usb 2 for my Skype phone and an occasional backup device. Buying the $99 drive is a no brainer.
I can rely on my iMac desktop if need be.

By the way, I have 2 worthless dell laptops sitting on my shelf. Anybody need one?

While I'm on the topic, lets understand how much you have to pay for a Dell or IBM docking station in order to get an optical drive for their ultraportable. Its likely more than $100. Many of these users will almost never use a docking station anyhow.

Secondly the HDD drive in theAIR is the same speed as the HDD in all of the ultraportables. Few to none of them offer anything faster than 4200RPM, and none of them currently offer SSD. And again, they are same or more expensive!

You can't compare this device to the 500 bargain laptop at walmart. In that light it is very expensive right? EEEPC is nothing more than a new version of the failed windows mobile devices like the Compaq AERO of the late 90's. Its 1/5 the cost because its 1/5 the system. Where the AIR is a computer, EEPC is really one of those cheap brother word processors people used in the 90's. Remember the Palm Foleo?

"Moreover, ultraportable-laptop users are generally Windows-based PC users, not Mac users, Citigroup said."

This is a fascinating bit of analysis. Of course... this has nothing to do with the fact that this is the first truly ultra-portable Mac.

wow, this article borders on ridiculous. the most quoted person, this Scott Armstrong, isn't an analyst but is president of his local mac user group. that's hardly any qualification.

these 2 statement are particularly moronic:
""They won't stay with this for long, they'll come out with something more innovative with Air," Armstrong said."
"While the product could be a long-term success, Apple will produce the laptop in small volumes until more features are added, Citigroup said."

so, their prediction is that Apple will soon stop selling the Air because nobody will buy them, and that they'll redesign it with a whole lot more "features"? yeah, that's gonna happen...because people want more "features" in their sleek, sexy, minimalist laptop. while Apple's at it, i'm sure they'll be adding a bunch more buttons to the iPhone.

I think it's pretty nice. Macs are slim anyway so a light easy to carry slim notebook is an idea that most other companies will make. I like the HP 13in notebook. It's small enough and has plenty of power and inputs. I still think asus looks cheap. I have never owned a mac but I think the air with the chip drive and two usb ports and a headphone jack is all the features most would need. I think the optical drive is close to extinction anyway. I do like cd's but I can see they could soon be replaced by cards like camera cards. Can't scratch em. I wish my laptop came without the monitor plug and the yellow round thing I don't even know what it is. I use pc but go mac...

The Air is overpriced but very cool.

Except the price, Apple got it right. Most all of the time you dont need all the ports they left out. You can always add a usb hub fotr all the krap you use once a month. usb ethernet, dvd burner ......whatever. Geeks want as many ports as possible, most consumers don't.

Many peecee laptops look sooooo klunky with a gazillion ports. Lets see, how about a 4 usb ports ethernt, modem, 2 ps2, firewire, ,two video, printer, pcimi, expansion, battery, floppy and whatever else. It looks like a geek with four cell phones, 3 beepers, walkie talkies, thick glasses, tool belt and a zune.

I would buy a macbook because I really think it's much better deal. The Air should start at $1499. I migh buy it then.

Hard drive is slow. Ah ha! I was wondering how this thing wouldn't overheat.

Shoot, if you are serious, I'll take one. :D LOL Why turn down a free laptop, even if it is a Dell? I can always find a use for it.

Re: MacBook Air Lacks Features, Analysts Say
You may think they look klunky, but if you looked at some of the more recent HP and Dell laptops, klunky does not apply. As to the ONE USB port, that means you cannot use a printer and a Flashdrive at the same time. Most USB Printers will not work off of a hub.

As to the connector with the yellow ring - thats the composit video out for use with some projectors. I can just see some sales rep walking into a meeting with his new Air Mac to make a presentation and with no composite connection or S-Video connection or Video out, he can't connect to the projector to make his sales presentation. Then he goes home to his corporate office which has a system to disable wireless for security purposes, and with not RJ-45 port, he cannot connect to the corporate network.

Typical Apple - looks but no sense about what is needed for business. That's what cost Apple the business world in the early days and opened the door for Microsoft to take that market over - no numeric keypad on the desktops. The IBM PC put the numeric keypad on their keyboards about 6 months after it was introduced, but it was about another 10 years before Apple followed suit - but the market was fairly well gone by then.

The only ports on my Wintel laptops I have not used are the PCMIA (but then I don't neet a WiFI connection to Verizon, AT&T or Sprint (as opposed to an 802.11 wireless connection) or the expansion connector. On my newest, I have not used the Firewire port - yet. I have had occasion to use all 3 of my USB ports at the same time. But then I'm not likely to buy a Mac anytime soon.

i think the MacBook Air's purpose is escaping most people's grasp of what it really is; a secondary computer. this is not meant to replace your main computer with its many USB, FireWire, and other ports to connect to any number of devices you so wish it to; this is meant as a space-saving computer to type something up quickly, surf the internet, and watch/listen to the digital media you've collected. i view this as something perfect for taking notes in a lecture, not as a desktop replacement (desktop replacement seems better fit for my MBP); this is how i think it should be reviewed and treated as.

@rgreen4;
yes, the other PC companies have gotten better about making better looking computers; computers running Vista, a disastrous OS if ever there was one (my complaints with 10.5 pale in comparison to Vista). as for your example of how the MacBook Air is useless, i think the fault would lie with the sales rep not looking into what his job required of his laptop, not Apple's design. ;)

to rgreen4:

I not sure you understand what I said.

If you are on this site you are not in the main stream with most users. You are a high(er) end user. They didn't build the Air with you in mind. Apple it GREAT at getting rid of all the crud that most people don't need and simplifying.

I run a bunch of stuff off my usb hub including my usb printer. As for the video, with a supplied adapter It will be, like most macs, MUCH easier to set up for video presentations than a pc. That quality would be a must.

I wish the price point was lower and that firewire was included. But they didn't build it for me ether.
