Re: Auto Technology: Same Gear, New Services
I don't know how all the others feel, but the more gizmos and electronic widgets you stick in a car, the bigger the repair bill will be when things break. I'm from the old school where when things broke, you could fix them yourself. All these fancy electronic toys do nothing to keep your car from breaking down. I carry a small tool kit and bag of replacement parts so I can get myself back on the road in the event of a breakdown. Some replacement lamps, a spare fan belt, extra set of ignition points, radiator hose, fuel hose and extra fuses. Besides a set of wrenches and screwdrivers, a small hammer and impact tool with hand sledge, I'm prepared for the inevitable breakdown. A can of gas and a bottle of antifreeze goes a long way to prevent me from being left on the side of the road waiting for a towtruck. I know that todays cars have computers and will even park themselves but none will keep you from freezing to death when something breaks on your way to the ski resort. The computers in todays cars are very expensive and not readily available at the local car parts store. But if you own one of the pre 1976 vehicles, you won't have to worry about that. The most destructive thing for todays cars is to run out of gas. This most often will destroy the fuel pump and kill the battery when you do get gas, trying to get fuel back up to the fuel injectors. The more complicated, the more likley to break and the more costly to get fixed. Who needs all that junk??
