Please watch suggesting a jump drive with U3. I and alot of other people have had nightmare stories with U3 software. Up to and inculding full systems crashs when plugged in. Read reviews on internet before thinking of uing it and the truble of getting it off your jump drive. I'm sure it works with some systems but to me I would not want to be the one crashings someonelses system.

I've not had any trouble with U3 drives, but I don't like them. The pop up drives me nuts, I hate the "helpful launcher". At least one can uninstall U3.

With the advent of Thinstall, you can now have your MSOffice suite or most other programs that would be useful as portable apps on your USB drive. Thinstall isn't for the faint of heart, but I can carry my MSOffice 2007 wherever I need to go now and I don't have to worry about a computer being able to handle the docx format.

Been thinking about a flash drive. What this really makes me thing though is why we don't have a good transfer cable for pc to pc file transfers. USB can't do it, and the only other solution is networking... which can be a pain.

The recommended utility for testing flash drive performance, HDTach, will only run on Windows 2000 and Windows XP systems. It will not run on any Windows Vista system.

Well I got to say this usb keychain device is quite useful if you dont want to carry a laptop.I only use this for special reasons when my laptops not avalable and this handy device does the job done right. I give it a 8 out of 10.One thing though electronic devices like these can catch a virus I might add.What happens if it does will be a scary thought to even use it if it has been infected.My fellow members if this happens you know the prosedure throw it away before it enfects your pc because it happend to me once and I had a hard troubble getting the virus off the pc.If you dont know here let me give you a little gift of reading my post.(go to find.pcworld.com/58695 and find.pcworld.com/58697.there you will find the tip of wipeing out those infections.

You suggest "be sure to install antispyware and antivirus software as part of your set of portable applications." I know Avast makes an antivirus for U3 drives. ARE there any non-U3, realtime antispyware/antivirus apps? I can find scanners galore but no realtime packages.

Also, TrueCrypt doesn't require you to copy a document to be able to work with it, once you mount the encrypted volume you use it just like you would any other drive. It does require admin privilges though.

I love portable apps, and I tried WinPenPak as it offers much more, but it was infected with a virus. I removed it, and I'm sticking with portable apps, and installing more from sites such as;
