Ballmer: Vista Is 'a Work in Progress'
Little of what is quoted here sounds very promising...

A work in progress (an OS not ready for serious work), bigger than XP but hopes it doesn't get bigger (but it will with the many required SPs since it's a work in progress), we're a software company only but virtualization is hard (so we kind of suck at software and can't get the Operating Systems right), let's move away from client software and focus on search, blogs and hosted services (to sell advertising and subscriptions but let's not get into the issues of online security). And PS: I prefer to speak to those who don't question anything we do (Canadian MVPs).

Sigh...

Maybe it's time for Microsoft to leave the OS market or for Steve Ballmer to retire.

I would have liked to hear issues like security, a lean and fast OS (max of two - home and busines), no registry and a move toward consumer rights addressed instead of the focus on the needs of Big Business, DRM, spyware. Go back to sleep Ballmer.

I have to day that I agree qith pcdos...This is an OS that seriously needs to be rethought.Like Steve Ballmer said,Vista is already bigger than Xp,and we need to make sure it doesn't get any bigger. But yet,Microsoft is trying to come to a compromise with their own programs. Many users that have tried both Vista and XP would opt for XP.As mentioned earlier,Microsoft and Steve Ballmer both stated that there is still room for improvemtn on Vista, but if they are aiming to keep vist no larger than it already is,there is NO room for improvement.Another thing,I have tried both XP and Vista,XP is a smoother running system and I have had numerous amounts of compatibility problems with Vista.Another problem is that Microsoft is trying to make this run smoother for big companies, they also need to think about the people at home who are being forced to use this less than efficient program. One more issue,XP isnt that expensive. However,Vista Home Premium is.They are forcing us to spend more for less!!

A work in progress? Think about that for a minute. How much did Microsoft spend to produce Vista? How man years did it take? How many Beta testers warned them about how bad it was and how completely off-track it's, "improvements" were? How many executives would have let that product out the door having spent more than 10 minutes trying to use it as customers would?

Instead of focusing all of their efforts on taking care of the "golden Goose" which is their OS business, Microsoft spent their time trying to be something else - Google. Instead of making sure Vista exceeded customer expectations they launched a hostile takeover of Yahoo. Instead of listening to their beta testers and their own insiders who we know warned about Vista's massive shortcoming they decided instead to simply use their monopoly to shove t down people's throats while they focused on selling advertising.

Every senior executive that had anything to do with Vista should be fired if Msft is to be saved.

I definitely agree with pcdos and the others who basically said the same thing. Originally I blamed my troubles on AOL. I got rid of them and still have problems. I am an elementary teacher and you can bet none of us teachers would get away with this nonsense. The good teachers would be ashamed to turn out this kind of crap. Vista has taken my brand new HP computer and turned it into trash; nothing but a headache. I opted for Vista thinking that eventually that would be all there is. I had hoped for bigger and better. As the kids say "NOT". I have a sister who is head of medical records at a large hospital. They won't even consider Vista because of all the problems. Shame on Ballmer and the rest of them for even considering putting this garbage on the market. I don't tolerate "fast and sloppy" in the classroom and I shouldn't have to tolerate it from them. Here's a novel idea--put a finished product on the market, one that even they can be proud of. Foreign concept!

I now have to take a class to "understand" Vista. Hopefully I can stop swearing every time I sit down at the computer. Do "Steve and the gang" pay any attention to the common people's comments? My thinking is not unless it will pay them big bucks.

Ballmer is in denial. Vista is so very slow, so poorly designed, so incompatible with other software and hardware, it's closer to a "disaster in process" than a "work in process". After a year running the syatem, if Vista does anything equal to XP, I haven't found it. Vista is a disgrace. My question--does anyone at MS have any pride in their work?

Well, Microsoft does consider your comments and gives you this generic answer: "We appreciate your concern, and we are working harder than ever to meet the needs of our customers". Am I right?

I think it's more like, "We hear you. We don't care. You really don't have many alternatives, so shut up and take it."

Ballmer: Vista Is 'a Work in Progress'
I think 'pcdos' and 'bigolddog' stated things quite well. I will say that if we're all honest, MOST software is a "work in progress". Generally, however, the software hasn't taken "man-years" to develop. Vista is a let down and it doesn't outshine the XP that's supposed to replace. The visual effects can be obtained with software from Stardock and the rest of the OS doesn't work as well as XP. I think Microsoft is treading down a dangerous path. They should be who they ARE and stop trying to BE Google or BUY Yahoo. FOCUS. Personally I've purchased 4 full copies of XP and am seriously looking at Linux and running XP in virtual machines.

Because, if you thing about it, when Microsoft sundowns Windows XP, Windows Vista will be the only option (and that of switching to the MAC OS)and they are doing this on purpose --> For money, and for people to go into the "Wow" factor of computing as they say in their advertisements.

I don't know About everyone else, but I have a new Dell system with Vista Home Premium and I think it works fine. I also have systems with XP and Xandros and they also work fine. I guess I don't see What the big Stink is all about!

Re: Ballmer: Vista Is 'a Work in Progress'
If you are saying XP + eye candy = vista , then you havent even explored vista. The visual effects are only a small % of vista. I know so many people who are running vista with a completely ripped UI , looks something like win ME , just coz it is a great OS .

Re: Ballmer: Vista Is 'a Work in Progress'
I would agree. I've been running Vista on at least one of my machines since it was in beta. Currently it's running on my main desktop and my main laptop. My point was that if anyone reads key sites on the Internet they would NOT come away with the impression that Mr. Ballmer is conveying. What I'm reading is that users don't want to switch to Vista, they want to stick with XP. Yes, XP is fine, but you have to change sometime. I started with CP/M and it's been a long road from there to Vista. I resisted switching from DOS to Windows because none of us really likes change, but the only thing constant IS change. Yes, Vista has some quirks, but so did XP when it first came out. It wasn't until SP2 that people started to quiet down. I'm happy with Vista and I use both it, XP, and Ubuntu. For those who don't want to change, don't. You'll have to change to something else eventually whether it's Windows 7 or Windows 2020. :D
