Are we sure downloads recommended in newsletters are clean?

I'm interested in the Lockergnome.com picks but 1) does PCWorld investigate them before including them in the newsletter, or 2) the entire lockergnome.com site malware free?

Re: Are we sure downloads recommended in newsletters are clean?
We acquire nearly all of the files in our downloads library from a third party company called Digital River. They do check each file to be sure it doesn't contain malware. In addition, any file that has a PC World review has been installed, checked, and used by our staff prior to writing the review. The description will indicate if it's a PCW review or a manufacturer's description of the file.

Occasionally, a file that doesn't contain malware will trip an anti-virus program. Here is a link to our knowledge base article on that. What does it mean when my system reports "spyware" or a "Trojan horse" in a file from the PC World Downloads Library?

If you do find something that you feel is mis-categorized or actually contains malware, please PM me the link to the file in our downloads library, and I will have our downloads reviewers check it.

Hi Number. I believe you already addressed this question about a month ago. Kellie explained exactly what happens. Please review your previous post.

Does PCWorld scan downloads before they recommend them in articles such as 101 Fantastic Freebies?

No worries. :D I just wanted to make sure. Since I do not work for PCWorld, I can only speculate but I am sure that any file they have available for downloading is scanned for malicious applications, no matter what the source of the file may be.

I don't handle the mailings and newsletters, so I don't know for sure what you got. If you still have questions about it, email webmaster@pcworld.com and Michael can tell you more about it.
