Re: Ditch Your Fax Machine
I still use a fax machine. I a little wary of signing up for services so I'll keep mine.

Thanks for this info! I've used FaxZero, but would like to give eFax a try based on your article!

Re: Ditch Your Fax Machine
Yes, I recently started using FaxZero also without any problems. I don't receive faxes but I might sign up for eFax in case I ever have the need.

Re: Ditch Your Fax Machine
eFax starts to charge a fee (or require upgrading to a paid account) when the number of inbound pages within a calendar month exceeds a threshold. We tripped that a couple years ago when negotiating the purchase of a home. Last month, I signed up with Packetel.com's $3.50/month service. It too gives me a random, non-toll-free number at which I receive ad-free faxes that Packetel forwards to my email inbox as .TIF or .PDF (my choice) files. In that format, no special software is required to use the service, unlike eFax, which requires a proprietary reader and includes advertising. Thus far, I'm thrilled with Packetel's fax service and even use it frequently simply to convert a paper document into a PDF for digital storage.

Re: Ditch Your Fax Machine
I've never owned a fax machine. I simply scan documents and send them by e-mail.

Re: Ditch Your Fax Machine
Way back in the day when I first put my computer on line through AOL using dial up, I began getting a large number of calls that were other computers or FAX machines attempting to get into my system. I switched to cable soon afterward and the calls continued. I would answer the phone, only to be greeted by the digital tones and screeching typical of a FAX machine attempting to connect. These calls stopped about three months later and hasn't happened since. Because of this I have not connected a FAX machine to my phone line as I don't need that hassle of getting spam on my FAX unit. I do own a FAX as it was a gift when a friends business closed an office and it was going to get tossed. It resides in the garage and I only turn it on and connect it to the phone line when I need to send something out and then disconnect it when I'm finished. I have attempted to hook it up to my VOIP but it always says it has poor signal and is unable to get a good connection so I only use it on a regular land line.

Re: Ditch Your Fax Machine
I have an HP All-In-One with fax, and it does come in handy. It has a button to turn the auto answer on and off. I don't use the fax very often, and the last time I went to use it, the phone line was disconnected. I may disconnect it again as whenever my landline rings, I get the rings through each telephone and the AIO.
